Convertible and 3-in-1 car seats, which can face either the rear or the front, typically have height and weight limits for the rear-facing position that are higher than the limits on infant seats. Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) helps your car to stay centred in its lane by monitoring the road markings. This can reduce the risk of collision and relieves some of the burden on you, the driver. This function of Toyota Safety Sense operates in conjunction with Adaptive Cruise Control meaning your journeys in congested traffic are less stressful. This standard comprehensive suite of six advanced safety features is designed to help keep you out of harm’s way.

BSM warns you when a vehicle in the next lane enters Sienna’s blind spot on either side of the vehicle. And when you’re in reverse, RCTA helps detect vehicles approaching from either side, warning you with side mirror indicators and a warning tone. ACC technology is regarded as a key component of future generations of intelligent cars. The technology enhances passenger safety and convenience as well as increasing road capacity by maintaining optimal separation between vehicles and reducing driver errors. According to Toyota, adaptive cruise control helps you maintain a preset distance from vehicles in front of you. It works when traveling at speeds of 28 mph or more.

Fold down either side of the rear seats to instantly make room for larger cargo. Fold them both down to maximize space, and you’ll be surprised at how much you can bring along for the ride. These features are usually activated using a button on the steering wheel with the image of a car next to a speedometer with an arrow pointing at it. A conventional cruise control system does not automatically keep a set distance away from the car in front, and it is indicated by a similar logo without the car next to the speedometer. A tip to know if your car has adaptive cruise control or regular cruise control is to look for the “gap distance” button, which usually shows a symbol of a car with horizontal distance bars in front. This button will determine how much space your car leaves between its front bumper and the rear of the car it is following. The standard Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) is designed to help you drive safely.

If it is triggered, you will receive a visual alert on your Toyota’s multi-information display. LDA won’t activate if the indicators are in use, and the system can be turned off if required. In some models, LDA is enhanced with Steering Assist which can apply corrective steering if the system is triggered. Pre-Collision System (PCS) uses a radar detector and front camera to detect objects ahead of your vehicle.

'Devastated': Passengers speak out after Bahamas-bound cruise diverted to New England, Canada over weather

cruise ship sinks 2023

Coast Guard officials told FOX Weather their rescue crews dealt with 10 foot seas and winds gusting to 30 mph at the wreckage site. A Coast Guard rescue helicopter was launched from the Turks and Caicos Islands and eventually found the other six crew members clinging to debris from the sunken vessel. For reasons unclear, two of Russia's sanctioned military supply ships have had to make a heroic journey around Europe after their latest run to the naval base at Tartus, Syria. The freighter Sparta IV has traveled back and forth between Russia and Tartus for years, moving equipment and stores for the Russian military.

As well as the Iona, 10 further vessels and a German Navy helicopter joined the search. A spokesperson for the Iona's P&O Cruises told Insider that the cruise liner joined the search and rescue operation soon afterwards, but by the afternoon was released from the efforts. The crew member went overboard off the German cruise ship, called the AIDAperla, on October 22 as the vessel was traveling from Hamburg to Spain. The ship's crew immediately launched a search for Tollemache and the United States Coast Guard was ultimately called in to help. Tollemache fell into the Pacific Ocean after going overboard off Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas on April 26 at about 11 p.m. But at least 10 people fell off major cruise line ships so far this year, turning fun-in-the-sun vacations into disaster situations — and only two survived the fall into the ocean.

Navigating the Tempest: The Ship’s Response and Rescue Efforts

They communicated with onshore rescue teams, providing updates on the ship’s location and conditions. By ensuring that the crew is well-prepared and equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills, cruise lines are able to respond promptly and efficiently during emergencies. Another crucial aspect of preventing future incidents is the implementation of new safety protocols and comprehensive crew training programs. Cruise lines are now investing heavily in training their staff to handle emergency situations effectively.

Norwegian Cruise Line Kicks off European Season With New Options

The Polesie is owned by a Polish company under a Bahamian flag with a crew of 22, according to The Guardian. Out of seven people on board, two were pulled out of the water, one was found dead, and a further four are presumed dead, per the CMME. According to The Guardian, the authority initially hoped some may be alive and sheltering in the vessel on the sea floor.

This will be a transformational venue where guests can enjoy wraparound ocean views during the day, including an inspiring waterfall. The cruise line will be revealing even more details about the ship as its debut draws closer. This new cruise ship features an LNG power system that reduces its greenhouse gas emissions by up to 20%. Its advanced onboard wastewater treatment system ensures that no water leaves the ship without undergoing strict treatments that reduce pollution and harm to local ecosystems.

If you’re a frequent cruiser, chances are likely that you keep a close eye on all the new cruise ships set to hit the high seas in the coming years. After all, you want to be one of the first of your traveling friends to check out all the latest and greatest in cruising, as soon as it’s available to the public. One of the crucial aspects that emerged from the incident was the need for enhanced weather monitoring and forecasting systems. Cruise ships operate in unpredictable environments, and accurate and timely weather information is vital for ensuring passenger safety. These first-hand accounts serve as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea and the importance of preparedness in the cruise industry. Cruise lines must continually evaluate and enhance their safety protocols to ensure the well-being of their passengers in the event of a similar incident in the future.

One of the crucial aspects of preventing cruise ship sinkings is enhancing the navigation systems on board. Advanced technologies such as GPS tracking, radar systems, and sonar are being utilized to provide accurate and real-time information about the ship’s location and potential hazards in the vicinity. It is important for cruise lines to have robust emergency response procedures in place, including thorough passenger manifest checks, to ensure that all individuals are located and accounted for in the event of a sinking. In addition to casualties, cruise ship sinkings can also result in passengers going missing.

"The weather conditions were less than ideal," Lt. Cmdr. Jeb Slick, the mission’s copilot, said in a press release announcing the rescue. "Our crew’s outstanding work ethic and dedication to training led to the successful rescue of these survivors." The officers of the cruise ship under the direction of Captain Paolo Severini altered the ship’s course after receiving the emergency alert.

Despite the challenging circumstances, many passengers also shared stories of camaraderie and support among fellow travelers, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit even in the face of adversity. On May 27, 2023, the Carnival Sunshine found itself in the midst of a powerful storm. Passengers and crew members were advised to stay in their cabins and secure any loose objects. However, the severity of the storm was initially underestimated, leading to a false sense of security among those onboard the ship.

The incident highlighted the need for comprehensive safety drills and training programs for passengers, enabling them to respond effectively to emergencies. The incident shed light on the importance of ship design and safety features in mitigating the impact of extreme weather events. Cruise ships should be built with reinforced structures and improved stability to withstand rough seas and high winds.

cruise ship sinks 2023

Greece's coast guard said it was notified by Italian authorities of the trawler's presence in international waters. It said efforts by its own ships and merchant vessels to assist the boat were repeatedly rejected, with people on board insisting they wanted to continue to Italy. Upon reaching the alert’s location, about 30 miles north of Puerto Plata, the officers on the Carnival Vista spotted a life raft. In a swift response, the cruise ship halted and successfully recovered the raft, rescuing six crewmembers of the small cargo ship. After learning of six more missing crewmembers, the Dominican Republic Navy was alerted. Following the Carnival Sunshine storm incident of 2023, it has become imperative for the cruise industry to reevaluate and strengthen its approach to safety.

MSC also said it offered passengers a choice of sailing to the new destinations or canceling for future credit, "which allows them to put the full value paid for this cruise toward another at their convenience." Throughout the storm, several passengers also complained they were starting to feel sick due to the boat’s rough movements. The Carnival Sunshine was returning to Charleston following a week-long trip in the Bahamas when it got caught in wild weather and rough seas over the Memorial Day weekend. The fourth ship from Virgin Voyages, Brilliant Lady will follow the same design as its predecessors.

Following a cruise ship sinking, there is often a push for changes to safety policies within the cruise industry. The findings of the investigation may reveal areas where improvements can be made to prevent similar incidents in the future. When a cruise ship sinks, a thorough investigation is conducted to determine the cause of the incident. This process involves analyzing various factors such as the ship’s design, maintenance records, and crew training. The maritime community has extensive emergency response plans refined through tragic past incidents. Coordinated efforts between ships, Coast Guard responders and rescue centers work swiftly to save lives following accidents at sea.

This can be most clearly seen in the new Grandeur Regent Suite, which offers 4,443 square feet, a sauna, steam room, spa room, capacity for six, 270-degree views, a balcony and a sunroom. While the cruise line hasn’t given us many peaks behind the curtain just yet, it promises that there’s a lot of fun yet to be announced. The new Carnival Jubilee is named after the original MS Jubilee, a Carnival cruise ship that was launched in the 1980s. You’ll find that this new ship is a big step up from its predecessor, though, with lots to do and family fun everywhere you look. But as for the fun stuff, MSC Euribia will offer five pools, one of the largest waterparks at sea, the longest LED dome at sea in the promenade, 10 restaurants and 21 bars. From MSC Cruises, Explora I is a new offering that’s designed to be a luxury experience like you’ve never seen before from MSC Cruises.

Despite the looming threat, the ship continued its course, hoping to navigate through the storm without incident. The Carnival Sunshine storm incident of 2023 was a harrowing experience for passengers and crew alike. It all began with the brewing storm that was forecasted days before the ship set sail. Weather experts had issued warnings about a developing tropical disturbance in the region. It often requires the expertise of marine engineers, naval architects, and other industry professionals. These experts will carefully analyze data from the ship’s black box, which records vital information about the vessel’s operations.

Celebrity typically attracts sophisticated young adults and middle-aged couples, though you'll notice more families during the summer holiday. You’ll find three main dining rooms, plus a pizzeria, gastropub, Italian restaurant, chop house, and Mediterranean bistro. Or, kick things up a notch with a Chef’s Table Lumiere experience of multiple courses with wine pairings.

There’s plenty to do on board, too, including making use of the two swimming pools, five whirlpools, and Dr. Andrew Weil's spa and wellness program. Not to mention a card room, casino, library, observation bar, and beauty salon. There are several options for onboard dining (aside from complimentary in-suite dining), including a fine dining option, The Grill by world-renowned chef Thomas Keller, and an open-kitchen style option for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Some look for romance, while others want to introduce the kids or grandkids to glaciers and eagles, gold panning and sled dogs. In 2022, the cruise line was the first to receive Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, meaning its Alaska-bound ships serve only fresh, certified sustainable and traceable wild Alaska seafood. The 7-Day Glacier Discovery itinerary is offered both northbound and southbound, both of which include cruising the Inside Passage and Glacier Bay, and calling upon Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway.

If you're happy with a couple of historic tours and a guided hike, you could likely budget $500 or less per person for shore excursions in Alaska. But if once-in-a-lifetime Alaska experiences like helicopter rides and flightseeing in Ketchikan are more your speed, you'll need to triple that amount -- or more. Oceania is another cruise line to offer a range of flexible tour options, so if you want to extend your trip with a hotel stay or a land program before or after you sail, it’s easy to find some fantastic options. The six-star service is exceptional and the excursions are well put together, giving guests incredible insights into Alaska. Silver Moon falls down a little on things to do while sailing, and the food quality isn’t rated as highly as other luxury ships – but guests on the ship have high expectations, so the food is still very good. Grand Princess is a good choice for all passengers – solo, couples and families.

With the Alaskan sailing season only six to seven months long, it’s a good idea to start planning now! Cruisers of all ages will enjoy the scenery, wildlife, and once in a lifetime shore excursions available on many Alaskan cruises. Nicknamed “The Love Boat,” Princess Cruises has been sailing to Alaska for more than 50 years, and is a terrific choice for couples looking to get away from it all.

The cruise line, which is celebrating its Silver Anniversary at Sea, offers 23 five-, seven-, eight- and 9-night round-trip Alaskan itineraries aboard the Disney Wonder, all of which depart from Vancouver. Shore excursions range from adventures like zip lining, hiking and rafting to seaplane exploration, photo safaris and high teas. Adults can enjoy themselves on an Alaskan Disney Cruise, too, with adult-exclusive dining; an adult-only pool and hot tub; fitness center; and Senses Spa & Salon.

Most sail along the Inside Passage, a maritime route along the state's southern coast (and into British Columbia and Washington state) that weaves around the area's thousand islands. Some venture farther north into the Gulf of Alaska; these are often one-way cruises that begin and end at the ports near Anchorage. If you want to see landlocked areas, such as Denali National Park, you can tack a cruise line-operated tour onto the beginning or end of your sailing for a seamless land and sea vacation. It's easier than fumbling with multiple train, bus, ferry and hotel reservations to cobble together the same trip on your own. One of the key reasons to cruise Alaska versus taking a land tour is to visit destinations along the Inside Passage that you cannot reach by road. Alaska may be one of the most beautiful places in the world, but it's rugged and can be tricky to get around.

The best Alaska food to try on a cruise includes king crab, salmon, fry bread, birch syrup, wild berries and more. In some parts of the state, dog sledding is still the primary mode of transportation through the winter months. Visit Alaska and get the experience for yourself at the Skagway Yukon Discovery and Dog Sled Tour. Exploring the interior of Alaska will give you an entirely different perspective on this vast and rugged state.

The majority of cruise ships cruising to or throughout Alaska depart from Seattle, Washington; Vancouver, Canada; Whittier, Alaska; or Seward, Alaska. When it comes to cruising in Alaska, you’ll be spoiled for choice as no other state has more coastline to explore. The best cruises in Alaska offer unparalleled experiences that will bring you up close to some of the most unique and awe-inspiring places in the world.
